This is Nathan's second year competing in the Battle of the Books program in middle school. (He is kind of hidden behind the trophy.) It is sort of like a quiz bowl, where there is a list of 27 books chosen every year, and then their two teams of 6 compete in several rounds against other schools. The moderator says, "In which book . . . . " and then asks some random detail from the book, and they have to correctly name the book and author. Nathan's school won their learning community (group of schools within the school district,) the county, and the regional competition. They competed at the state level this past weekend and didn't win, but either won or tied every round.
